Recording
the Spirit of Harmony
On the spring equinox of 2009, 24
women journeyed to California’s old Spanish Mission
of San Antonio de Padua, a serene enclave located on the
grounds of Hunter Liggett Army Base in the quiet hills halfway
between Santa Barbara and San Francisco, with crystalline
acoustics in its sanctuary. These invited women had never
sung as a group before, some had never met, and 18 of them
came from considerable distances to supplement the small
Santa Barbara group in whose company the songs had their
beginnings.
The alchemy of participants, place,
purpose, and the songs themselves enabled the recording
to be completed in a single weekend. Scott led the chorus
in all but one of the songs; “Blessings on Your Journey”
was directed by Kate Munger, founder of the Threshold Choir.
At the end of the long Saturday session, at Scott’s
request, Munger led the ensemble in Alyx Benham’s
song, “Kinder,” in an outpouring of gratitude
and release. Benham has generously agreed to its inclusion
on the CD.
